Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. As an IBCLC and Midwife, I believe in "function over appearance." Some babies have a visible membrane but feed perfectly well. We only consider a procedure (frenulotomy) if the tongue-tie is physically restricting the baby’s ability to feed or causing you pain. My first priority is a full feeding assessment to see if we can resolve the issue through positioning and attachment first.

The tongue-tie release itself is extremely quick—literally a few seconds. The area has very few nerve endings and minimal blood flow. Most babies are more startled by being held still than by the "snip" itself. I recommend a "comfort feed" (breast or bottle) immediately after, which provides instant natural pain relief and reassurance.

While the NHS provides vital care, clinics are often under immense pressure and may only have time for the procedure itself. By booking privately with me, you get a minimum of 60–90 minutes of dedicated time. We don't just "fix the tie"; we spend time on the breastfeeding technique, your physical recovery as a mother, and a holistic feeding plan that continues long after I leave your home.

As a Midwife, I take clinical safety very seriously. For a tongue-tie release to be performed safely, your baby must have had Vitamin K (usually given at birth via injection or three oral doses). If you chose to decline Vitamin K or haven't completed the oral course, we will discuss the best and safest way to proceed during our consultation.

Every baby is different. Some parents feel an immediate "release" and improved latch in the very first feed. For others, it can take 1–2 weeks for the baby to "re-learn" how to use their tongue now that it is free to move. I provide you with aftercare support and exercises to help this transition go as smoothly as possible.

No, you do not need a referral to book a private assessment. However, with your permission, I am happy to send a summary of our consultation to your GP or Health Visitor to ensure your NHS Red Book records are kept up to date and your care is integrated.
