Find out MorePreparing for Our Visit: A Stress-Free Checklist
I want our time together to be as relaxed and productive as possible. Please don’t worry about the housework or being “ready” for me—my only priority is you and your baby. To help us get the most out of the session, here are a few helpful tips:
1. The “Red Book” & Medical Info
Please have your baby’s Personal Child Health Record (The Red Book) handy. I will need to check:
- Birth weight and recent weight history.
- Vitamin K administration details.
- Any notes from your midwife or health visitor.
2. Timing the Feed
If possible, try to time things so your baby is due for a feed shortly after I arrive.
- Aim for a baby who is “interested” but not frantically hungry.
- If they are desperate for food before I get there, give them a small “snack” feed to take the edge off, then we can do a full observation together.
3. Your Space
We don’t need a clinical setup! We just need:
• Good Lighting: A spot near a window or a bright lamp is perfect for the oral assessment.
• Comfort: Wherever you usually feed (the sofa, a bed, or a favourite chair).
• A Flat Surface: A changing mat on a table or flat surface where I can safely perform a physical assessment of the baby.
4. Supplies to Have Nearby
• Your usual feeding equipment (breast pump, nipple shields, or bottles/formula if you are using them).
• A couple of muslin cloths.
• A clean nappy and a change of clothes for the baby (just in case!).
5. Support for You
If you have a partner, a friend, or a family member who is supporting you, they are more than welcome to be present. Having an extra pair of hands can be very helpful.
